It is with a sad heart that I have to say that our old mate, Micky, passed onto the Rainbow Bridge on November 22, 2006 at the age of 12 1/2 yo. We moved to a new house mid 2006, and unfortunately inherited paralysis ticks along with the wonderful native Australian wildlife. Micky picked up a paralysis tick, even though I had put Frontline on him only 5 days earlier. Prior to this Makena was coming in season, and Micky, ever the hopeful stud dog, knew this and did his usual act of going off his food as a girl was coming into season. This proved to be his downfall as he had lost weight, and when the tick 'attacked' he didn't have the strength to fight the toxins he had received. We eventually made the difficult decision to take him to the vets again, but this time to let him go. He now has a wonderful resting place where he can hear us, under some trees near the house looking out over the mountains he looked over in life. Rest in Peace old man, we miss you every day, but look upon your offspring and see you living on through them. Thank you for 12 1/2 wonderful years, you were a noble, gentle dog right until the end.
Micky was the grand old gentleman of our kennel, in every sense of the word. He was a gentle and happy dog, who endeared himself to people who meet him.
Micky, when he retired from the Show ring, had amassed well over 1000 challenge points. He was always placed at every Specialty show he attended throughout his show career, from Qld to NSW and SA, entering under Australian, USA, UK, and South African Judges. Micky has been awarded Multi Reserve Dog Challenges at these Specialties, as well as Best Gaited and Best Headed. His progeny have also gone on to win Best gaited, Best headed, Best footed as well as Reserve Challenges, and Classes in Show at the Specialty level also! Micky’s progeny are also Multi Best in Group, Reserve in Group, Classes in Group, Best of Breed, and Runner up Best of Breed winners at All Breed Shows. In 1999 he was awarded the ‘National Dog’ Best of Breed winner, which is a very prestigious award!
He began his show career in fine form being awarded Baby Puppy In Group at his first show. This was to set the standard for his future showing career. He was out of the ring for over 12 months due to my work commitments, but re entered the show ring with a force as a Junior Dog.
Mick has amassed Multi: Runner up to Best in Show, Class in Show, Best in Groups, Class in Groups, Best of Breed and Runner up Best of Breed awards throughout his show career. In fact his actual last show under Breed Specialist Judge: Ms Patrice Johansen (Jomeja Rhodesian Ridgebacks) saw him at 10yo, being awarded Best of Breed and Open in Group! Not bad for an old Boy!
At the age of 8yo he showed that old dogs can still outrun the youngsters, by attaining Best in show at the RRCQ Inc Specialty Show. He then went on to two Hound Club Shows (on the same day!), to be awarded Reserve in Show at one and Best of Breed at all 3 shows! We were certainly blessed that day, as his daughter, Zari and Granddaughter Makena, shared the challenge bitch awards between them at these shows!
